My quick take on college
1. It can hold you back from moving forward in a company should you find yourself working for one you like instead of being self-employed.
2. The two most successful men I know were C students throughout their academic histories. One graduated college and one didn’t. Both are self-employed, live in mansions, drive expensive cars and love their work.
3. I think the greatest benefit of a college education - aside from imparting any specific skill set or knowledge - is that it gives kids a sense of the world around them. It clues them in that there’s more to life beyond their own neighborhood and friends. That can be a tough eggshell to crack for some kids but I still think it’s important that they do.
I personally think college is a crapshoot. The job I have now doesn’t require a college degree. In fact, I’m the only one here with one. But I’m glad I went. I needed college.
I needed college for the social aspect. I needed to learn that I wasn’t perfect, that I was going to fall at some point and I also needed to learn how to get back up.
I also needed to get out of my small town, make friends, and live my life. I don’t think I would have done that if I hadn’t gone to school 3 hours away from my folks.
For me, college wasn’t about the classes, it was for the life lessons.
Completely agree.
Sure, I learned some academic lessons in college, but the social experience was far more valuable. I went to a school that stressed communication, especially written communication. Those skills have proven to be much more important that the classes supporting my economics degree.
